"my analogy for when something goes wrong out of the blue, as it so often does, as I was beginning to find out at that time in my life. I wanted something symbolic of that, so to me it was some fictitious character called Maxwell with a silver hammer. I don't know why it was silver, it just sounded better than Maxwell's hammer. It was needed for scanning. We still use that expression now when something unexpected happens." -Paul McCartney

Maxwell's Silver Hammer는 폴 매카트니가 작사 작곡 했습니다

폴에 의하면 모든 일이 순조롭게 진행되고 있을때 불시에 맥스웰 은망치가 쾅쾅 내려치듯 

모든게 무너질수 있다는 뜻을 말하고 있다고 합니다.

하지만 첫 가사에서 존을 맥스웰이 죽인다라거나 무서운 느낌을 주는 가사입니다.

존을 죽인다는것 때문에 존과 폴의 불화에 관한 이야기가 아니냐는 추측이 많은 노래입니다. 

(실제로 폴과 존은 Abbey Road 제작당시 사이가 나빴습니다.)

존은 이 노래를 극도로 싫어했다고 합니다. (존 뿐만이 아닌 다른 맴버들도 싫어했다고 발언한적이 있습니다)

노래의 분위기는 참 신납니다. 폴의 감각적인 멜로디만 봐서는 참 귀여운 느낌까지 주고 있지만 가사는 섬뜩하죠.

이 곡에도 재미있는 에피소드가 하나 숨겨져있습니다.

노래 중간중간에 "깽깽" 소리는 멜 에반스가 레코딩때 진짜 망치를 철판에 때리는 소리를 녹음해서 곡에 넣었다고 합니다.
